*Executive order to end duty-free entry for cheap Chinese goods caught package carriers off guard *U.S. Postal Service has no system in place to collect tariffs or remit them to U.S. government *As packages piled up, White House had to pause its own order

U.S. Postal Service has no system in place to collect tariffs or remit them to U.S. government

What‽ That makes no sense. Then what do they do with the non-de minimus stuff? I know I had to pay customs to receive a package a couple years ago when the de minimus limit was lower.

The stupidity in all of this is Canada’s duty-free entry limit was $20.

Dunno why America left theirs so low for so long.

It was $200 for a long time(Thanks to GOP sycophant Stephen Harper), then after covid it was jumped up to something like $500 to kickstart cross border travel. Then it was reduced to $20.

Yes, for cross-border shopping with at least 48 hrs spent in the US.

But for mail order shipments it’s $20.

Closing this loophole is the right thing to do. But the cackhanded idiocy with which it was done is… well, just par for the course.
