I’ve lived in rural America. I don’t recall it being nearly as idyllic as you’re describing. I remember a metric fuck-ton of opioid addicts, illiterates, bible-thumpers, teenage pregnancies, child abuse, and a lot of pride in one’s own ignorance.

It sounds like you were too involved with the wrong people. When I encounter anyone like that, I avoid them, and it’s usually quite easy to keep them out of my life.
