In February, jurors found Andrew Buen guilty of criminally negligent homicide in the 2022 death of Christian Glass. Prosecutors alleged that Buen needlessly escalated a standoff with Glass, who showed signs of a mental health crisis and refused orders to get out of his SUV near Silver Plume, a small, former mining town along Interstate 70 in the Rocky Mountains west of Denver.
His parents and the agencies involved reached a $19 million settlement that also made changes to how officers are trained to respond to people in mental health crises.
I’m shocked the state decided to prosecute. But 3 years is low.
I mean this happens all the time in black and other minority communities, has even been on the news several times over the last few years, and literally nothing happens. I guess he just pissed off the wrong white family with enough resources or pull to do something about it. It’s terrible what happened to this guy but it’s been equally tragic every time it happened to a non-white person, and it’s unfortunate that this gets so more coverage
I’ve never seen data on it, but from what I’ve heard it’s unlikely that he would survive for more than 1yr regardless of sentence duration.
I hear that all the time about cops, child molesters, etc., but they just put them in a separate unit with others of their kind, away from the general population. He’ll be fine, and he’ll be out in less than two years, with good behavior. He’ll probably miss only one Christmas with his family.
Then ICE will hire him.
