This is terrifying. Also another case where the use of clinical language really grinds my gears. Sheriff said the 25-year-old died from “mechanical and positional asphyxia”… i get that’s precisely what it’s called but it also seems to create this rift between:
- a young man having a mental health crisis while in custody of police
and
- the police having direct responsibility for this outcome
It’s like: the guy was there, the cops were there, mechanical and positional asphyxia took place, the man died. A room full of cops and they can’t figure out exactly what happened? Jesus fucking Christ
Ten Montgomery County Jail employees have been put on paid administrative leave since the Montgomery County coroner ruled the manner of Christian Black’s death as homicide
Kill someone, get a paid vacation! On the taxpayers dime!

While I hate this world for what I’m reading, we should be careful to separate suspensions and guilt. Due process is there for a reason, and suspension will end at conviction. I feel like we’re constantly fighting for due process in today’s world, but it needs to exist everywhere if it’s going to work. For the family’s sake, I hope it’s a quick trial.
