Ten jail staff members were put on paid administrative leave after the coroner ruled Christian Black died most likely due to "mechanical and positional asphyxia," the county sheriff said.
This is terrifying. Also another case where the use of clinical language really grinds my gears. Sheriff said the 25-year-old died from “mechanical and positional asphyxia”… i get that’s precisely what it’s called but it also seems to create this rift between:
a young man having a mental health crisis while in custody of police
and
the police having direct responsibility for this outcome
It’s like: the guy was there, the cops were there, mechanical and positional asphyxia took place, the man died. A room full of cops and they can’t figure out exactly what happened? Jesus fucking Christ
