If you’ve just stepped out of uni into an internship you still have a lot to go, but getting through college, uni and into an internship is an achievement in itself. They won’t be disappointed, they will probably be proud that the work they did encouraged you to stay in education for as long as you did!
When the API changes came in on Reddit it appeared to cause quite a few people to shift to Lemmy, but not that many. I’ve said this before in other posts but the onboarding experience for Lemmy is awful for your average joe. From what I’ve read it was the same situation for Mastodon and that is why Bluesky took off instead.
There needs to be a clear concise point of entry for new users to the Fediverse that empowers users to quickly customise what they want to see. Most people don’t care about how the Fediverse works and its benefits, they just want to consume content.
If I were technically capable and had the drive to do so I’d create a single onboarding site that would ask the user a few preference defining questions, chuck them on an instance that is relevant and apply some filters so they don’t get spammed with anime posts if that isn’t their thing. Oh and maybe show a couple of mobile apps.

Mr Brightside by the Killers. The tune was good and felt energetic when it came about, but it’s about a guy being cheated on. Having had someone cheat on me around the time it came out it hit really close to home and I just don’t enjoy listening to the song.
The problem with being in the UK is that it’s so overplayed and I just have to tune it out.

The first bad interview I turned up and had to wait for the owner who rocked up 15 minutes late. We had a discussion and he was happy with my IT skills, we then got into a discussion of how to run the business.
He asked me what would I do if a salesman kept selling Linux support to businesses but the company had no one that had experience of it, I said it didn’t feel morally right to sell something that you can’t actually fulfill currently, put a cork in the salesman regarding Linux support, train/hire staff and when ready then continue to offer it. He said that’s not how his business works and to drive the business the salesman was doing the right thing.
During that interview I saw someone walk into the office that I had worked with in the past, they were incredibly unreliable, bad at the job and were fired, this one guy appearing gave me the final sign this was not the workplace for me. After the interview they gave me an offer that I declined.
The second interview probably a out 2 months later I turned up to was a small company of maybe 3 people. I turned up and it was a shared office space they used, he walked up to the receptionist and asked if there was a meeting room available, she said no. So he led me to the kitchenette area where he offered for me to sit on a sofa not to dissimilar to this…
Having the hum of a vending machine in the background added to the ambience. We got to chatting and it sounded like the guy didn’t really know what he wanted to do with the business or how to run it, generally seemed disorganised.
Towards the end of the interview wouldn’t you know it, the same guy I used to work with walked into the kitchenette wearing the t-shirt of a company in the building, gave me “the nod” and proceeded to use the vending machine, which failed to dispense his choice and he stood there shaking the machine.
This guy must have been some kind of angel in place to stop me from taking bad jobs. I declined the offer they gave me. A year or so later I was telling a friend about this and we checked on the company, it went out of business.
They were bad interviews, but I still got something out of them.
You probably already have one, but if you don’t; get an electric toothbrush.
Also get a water flosser for when you CBA to manually floss! Imo something is better than nothing.
As adults we are dubious of the results that AI gives us. We take the answers with a handful of salt and I feel like over the years we have built up a skillset for using search engines for answers and sifting through the results. Kids haven’t got years of experience of this and so they may take what is said to be true and not question the results.
As you say, the kids should be taught to use the tool properly, and verify the answers. AI is going to be forced onto us whether we like it or not, people should be empowered to use it and not accept what it puts out as gospel.
“It’s the anxiety associated with real-time conversations, potential awkwardness, not having the answers and the pressure to respond immediately” - this hits the nail on the head for me about not wanting to be on the phone/teams call in the work place. Being pulled into a call with no context is my biggest nightmare.
Instances are great, but are also a problem for onboarding.
Is there a single point of entry for people now? I can imagine there being a website people could go to that asks a few simple questions and sorts (or load balances) people to certain instances. This would of course need some way for people to transfer their accounts in the future should they not be happy with their instance. Additionally each instance would need to have some kind of API call for the single point of entry to create the accounts You could even have a simple survey to gauge people’s interests to help them in the community filtering process and present the mobile apps that are available.
Just some thoughts of course on how it might be possible to improve the users first experience.
Is the onboarding experience any better? I remember the initial process of joining Lemmy felt very shady and not user friendly. That can be a massive deterrent for people joining. Then on top of that having to filter out all the communities that are not to my taste.
Overall it was a messy non-user friendly experience, but now that I’m here I’m happy.
It’s likely A/B Testing and when people receive the new layout, if Youtube sees a drop in engagement for their experiment they may just ditch it.
What annoys me is you still have to pay for audio books.

Have production costs increased or has marketing/publishing costs gone up dramatically as gaming attempts to get a greater demographic and introduce predatory monetisation methods? Tools and techniques for game development surely improve over time making development easier and more cost effective.
How about capping the amount they can earn above their lowest paid employee? For them to rise they have to take everyone with them
