People incorrectly assume “European alternative” means “better alternative” when sometimes, that’s not the case. Privacy needs to be approached with skepticism, no matter what surface-level credential something has.
Things like these might be table stakes, but they should not be the end of your search for an alternative product.

This is a big deal because this will hit low end customers the hardest. People who shop at Dollar General for their phones.
I remember when relatively speedy device unlocks were mandated. And before then, contracts would basically include the price of the phone in them. Now we have to pay extra for the phone, and it’s still not ours. Very cool.
To be fair to Vivaldi’s fans, that browser (while also too bloated for me to use) does steer clear of a lot of the criticisms leveled against Opera here. The author is a Vivaldi fan, so I imagine they’re all coming from a genuine place. Specifically:

It’s funny to me that their best excuse to you and me is “it’s your choice.” No reasoning about why AI is good or valuable, probably because they don’t have one.

Call me cynical, but I believe that companies might be happy keeping the prices high if it means they can shuffle consumers onto computers as a service. Maybe wasted silicon will end up being good for business.

the AI slop people aren’t going to document their patches as such. That’s such an obvious truism that I don’t understand why anybody even brings up AI slop.
He’s right, and this should be obvious. I have seen many a conversation between somebody who has filed an AI-generated bug report, and a developer trying to diagnose it, where it’s clear the person who’s filed the bug report has no idea what they’re talking about.

That’s… Not really a switch. If somebody has to go to a secret place, get past a warning sign, and type in a half dozen secret commands… it sounds more like an espionage movie than the flipping of a switch.
And people have already complained that some of those flags don’t affect newer ones, which Mozilla keeps adding. We might as well say Microsoft has a setting to turn off telemetry, never mind it’s also hidden and it also keeps getting switched back on.
