Yeah, I think Chrome did have a faster JS engine, but those days had way less JS than we have now, I don’t really remember noticing it, but it’s very possible that my web browsing activity wasn’t the same as other lemmy users.

The majority of studies show that a global transition to 100% renewable energy across all sectors – power, heat, transport and industry – is feasible and economically viable.
Ah right yeah I understand, thanks for explaining. I used to use Safari a lot more on Mac but I stopped recently and switched to Firefox because some websites just wouldn’t work in Safari. :/
You get credit checked when applying as a tenant for rented accommodation and even for some jobs. It’s not just about loans. A $240,000 property loan is inconceivable for me, and I have a pretty high paying job, because my credit report is all kinds of fucked up.
We’re kind of already there - there’s Chromium, Webkit and Gecko and that’s about it, two of which are controlled by the biggest ad companies in the world, and the third is heavily subsidised by the first. Mozilla was effectively forced into implementing DRM into the browser already, and there’s plenty of other “””standards””” published and approved by Google that Mozilla is pressured into implementing but doesn’t want to for security and privacy reasons.
I definitely expect it’ll get worse.
Sure, and Bernie Madoff’s ponzi scheme ran for almost two decades. It’s your money man, do what you want, but if you ask me, there’s gonna be a lot of unfortunate, hard-working folk holding the bag when people realise that the entire thing is basically worthless
I’m really curious about why you feel that Apple is somehow less shady than Mozilla?
Just use Firefox and don’t worry too much about it. Tech people are a bit crazy about this stuff sometimes. It’s just telemetry going to the Mozilla Foundation, it’s not a huge deal IMO. If you really really care then use Librewolf but prepare to accept the trade off that some websites just don’t work sometimes.
I’m right there with you. I hear people talking about how slow and bloated Firefox was, which I do not remember at all. I remember Chrome using some tricks to seem faster like preloading websites and preferential treatment for Chrone with Google websites and stuff, but in terms of raw performance I felt like they were roughly equal. I think the main reason for Chrome’s popularity is how firmly entrenched Google is/was with Google Search, Gmail, YouTube etc. and constantly having the “get Chrome!” ads pushed to users.
That isn’t necessarily going to be possible. There are many diverse fingerprinting techniques, I really don’t think it would be trivial to spoof them all. User agent is easy but stuff like TLS fingerprinting is much harder to spoof.
I remember back in the day, doing all of my browsing in Firefox, and having IE6 on my desktop for the random few websites/tools that only worked in IE for one reason or another. That is becoming a reality already with Chrome, I need to occasionally use WebUSB, which only really Chrome supports, because Mozilla quite rightly refuses to implement the spec.
I mean, Google has probably even more unethical practices, I would have thought. (compared to Opera, not to China. Though the US is worse than China for sure.)
That bubble is gonna burst eventually. Bitcoin is only useful for buying monero, which is only useful for buying drugs on the internet. It’s massively overvalued. Once all of the big players have divested it’ll go down pretty fast. If you’re invested in crypto you should pull your money out of it, I really don’t think it’ll last much longer.
You’d better let the International Energy Agency, a department of the OECD, know that their research and report is wrong, then.
“Substantiated by in-depth case studies, this report infers that, almost anywhere on the planet, nearly 100% variable renewable energy (VRE) resources such as solar and wind power grids firmly supplying clean power and meeting demand 24/365 are not only possible but would be economically viable.”
