Technology@lemmy.world•More than 20% of videos shown to new YouTube users are ‘AI slop’, study findsEnglish
8·3 days agoFor YouTube, I’ve switched to Grayjay and I just subscribe to creators I like. I ignore the home feed.
This has removed AI slop, ads, and shorts, which is awesome, but I the tradeoff is jot having a useful recommendation feed. Its not as good as YouTube of old, but worlds better than YouTube of the last few years.

News@lemmy.world•Peter Thiel and Larry Page are preparing to flee California in case the state passes a billionaire wealth tax, report saysEnglish
2·3 days agoIsn’t it a universal truth that the people who removed the most about “people moving from California” are the people who moved there from California 3 years ago?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Where does Palantir get the data from to begin with?English
1·3 months agoEven if you never went online, heaps of data about you is collected and sold.
- ALPRs collect and sell your car’s movement and location data.
- Stores you shop at collect identity data and share your purchases and consumer behaviors, even when you pay cash.
- Banks and financial institutions share information about your assets, financial holdings, purchases, and electronic transactions.
- Governments mandate that all sorts of information about you is public.
And if you are online, the “be as anonymous as you can and don’t share your personal data over the internet.” statement makes it sound easy, which is far from true. It’s a constant game of whack-a-mole where one needs incredibly disciplined to compartmentalize and segregate login sessions across browsers and devices. If one isn’t technically skilled and constantly vigilant, it’s a losing battle. That’s why awareness and campaigns that support privacy focused regulation are important.

Reddit@lemmy.world•TIL You Can Be Silently Shadow Banned on RedditEnglish
3·4 months agoIt happened to me as well. Using reddit behind a VPN seems to trigger that pretty fast. I’d bet if she goes to your profile page ie, u/theNameYouChose) it will say the account is deleted to her, but you can still log in.
YouTube is drowning in it, and Google/YT leadership either doesn’t care or doesn’t seem to realize it. I started using Grayjay recently, subscribed to just creators I like. And for the first time in a long while, my feed isn’t two-thirds AI slop. It’s made YouTube tolerable again.

Humans are greedy, selfish, and shitty regardless of which generational-cohort they’re associated with. What the boomers had was raw numbers… enough money and a voting bloc big enough to force self serving legislation for most of their adult lives. Gen-X will never be able to do that because Millennials have already surpassed them in voter numbers. So Gen-X won’t enact a heap of shitty self-serving policy, but only because they couldn’t. Not that they won’t want to.
