No one is fucking “fleeing”.

No one is going downtown on Monday and maybe people are heading out of town to avoid the “crowds”. But people aren’t “fleeing” shit any more than they “flee” on the 4th of July or Memorial Day.

But they waited so long to do it. I think everything except the iPhone was already usb c (iirc) and given the supply chain lead times, the timing of the reg vs the release of the new usb c phone, I really think they had the usb-c phones in flight for a couple years.

Maybe the looming threat of the reg made it happen. Maybe it made it happen faster. But it seemed like the direction they were headed.

At the end of the day, I’m glad they regulate vs what the US does. Even if their regs aren’t perfect / late, they do something for their constituents.

I gotta say that seemed pretty performative considering apple was obviously already moving that way with usb-c on all their devices.

I joined back in college when it was an invite only walled-garden of college kids. Zucks pic was still in the banner when I joined iirc. They hadn’t release “the wall” or much of what Facebook eventually became.

But when parents and coworkers started trying to friend request me I realized it was time to bail.

So 12 years ago? Maybe just 10.

The sad reality is that most people, like an overwhelming majority, won’t leave. Most don’t even have a clue this is happening in the first place, those that do, love their family and friends more than they hate Mark.

And where are they going to go? I heard Cory doctorow liken it to Anatevka (the town in Ukraine from fiddler on the roof) the people were sad they were leaving because they knew it would never be the same again and they might not see each other again. They didn’t like getting beat by Cossacks and it was a shitty place to be but they didn’t want to leave their people.

Dumping a platform that has your friends and family is a hard thing to do especially if it’s the only meaningful way you can connect with them otherwise. Especially if you know some won’t leave and some aren’t going to go to the same place you are.

Can’t speak to back then since I just got my first iPhone but I might like Maps more than Waze and certainly more that googles maps.

I don’t know that anyone “needs” anything more than bash. It’s the creature comforts that sell the other shells. That said, bash has never hung or crashed on me. I can’t say the same for zsh.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like they’ll need anyone to narc him out. They tracked him all the way to the hostel he was staying at and have more photos of him.

Combine that with a facial rec search against drivers license photos and other holdings, they’ll dial it in sooner than later.

Tesla stocks (and quite a few other company’s stocks) are not based on ‘fundamentals’. They are based on hype, speculation, and perceived future value.

People investing in tesla either 1. Are ‘playing the game’ and trying to take advantage of the hype. Which incentives them to also hype because they benefit when more people buy the stock. Think crypto bro-esque grifting. Id also throw in people who do short term trading to time hype jumps. 2. Novice/uninformed investors who don’t understand fundamentals (who may be getting boozled)3. People that understand fundamentals but are also hedging against a miracle.

Elon isn’t a stupid guy. There is a reason why Musk is constantly hyping things. It keeps the stock high. It’s keeps the buzz going which gets more people to buy in. It keeps him rich which lets him do silly things like buying Twitter or donating to political campaigns and ingratiating him to the president elect.

But the overall valuation of Tesla absolutely, unequivocally is not based on fundamentals/realistic valuation of the company. It’s almost all a “bet” and people buying stocks are gambling.

I have a few LLMs running locally. I don’t have an array of 4090s to spare so I am limited to the smaller models 8B and whatnot.

They definitely aren’t as good as anything you get remotely. It’s more private and controlled but it’s much less useful (I’ve found) than any of the other models.

Better is entirely subjective. Mastodon has so much friction for an average person.

Not to mention most servers are filled with tons of “WeLl ACKWalLY…” types or legit weirdos.

I’ve heard it summarized: if you hated Twitter you’ll like mastodon. If you liked Twitter, you’ll love bluesky.

Mastodon aint for everyone. Id hazard to say it’s not for most people. It’s also no immune to ads or natural centralization.

It reminds me of that South Park episode about Walmart where they fought off the super store and shopped at the small store until it grew into the super store.

If China is bad, and the US is good, then why wouldn’t we want our military to have access to the same (or better) tooling than they have access to.

Imagine falling asleep on a flight and then you wake up to punches to the face. Id imagine most people would just instinctively cover their face and try to protect themselves.

I am 100% with Linus AND would say the 10% good use cases can be transformative.

Since there isn’t any room for nuance on the Internet, my comment seemed to ruffle feathers. There are definitely some folks out there that act like ALL AI is worthless and LLMs specifically have no value. I provided a list of use cases that I use pretty frequently where it can add value. (Then folks started picking it apart with strawmen).

I gotta say though this wave of AI tech feels different. It reminds me of the early days of the web/computing in the late 90s early 2000s. Where it’s fun, exciting, and people are doing all sorts of weird,quirky shit with it, and it’s not even close to perfect. It breaks a lot and has limitations but their is something there. There is a lot of promise.

Like I said else where, it ain’t replacing humans any time soon, we won’t have AGI for decades, and it’s not solving world hunger. That’s all hype bro bullshit. But there is actual value here.
