The United States military says it shot down an Iranian drone that approached a US aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, amid continued efforts by regional powers to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The Shahed-139 drone was shot down by an F-35C from the Lincoln, which CENTCOM said was sailing about 800km (500 miles) from Iran’s southern coast.

Sounds like needless destruction of a vehicle over international waters: almost like the usa navy is a rouge force of terror these days

Apparently, the drone cost 20,000$. Meanwhile the fighter jet fuel, not to mention the missile, cost several millions of $. Whatever the reason, the cost to both sides wasn’t considered. Either the carrier crew panicked, or they think they have reasons to believe it was worth the cost for other reasons. Maybe they are trying to provoke Iran.

It was a good trade for Iran for sure. Using an F35 anti air missile to shoot down a drone is bonkers. The Iranians broadcasted the drone’s location on flightradar so the US should have known it was coming.

Apparently Iran has already deployed another Shahed and the IRGC is being coy about whether the drone was attacked, as acknowledging it would require enacting their promised non-symbolic retaliation too soon.

Right on. I just automatically assumed it was the US trying to justify attacking Iran with some made up shit, it’s a bit of a default for me lately

Shooting down individual surveillance drones isn’t that difficult for a navy that size. Both Russia and Ukraine do it all the time, and this one drone was known to be observing CENTCOM movements for a couple days now. They don’t need to lie when it was clearly meant as a provocation, though I assume the drone will be framed as a kamikaze FPV drone by the Imperial Press.
