it seems like lemmy.today is decent, especially since there are no blocked instances. i moved from lemmy.sdf.org recently since their servers were down too often.

i always use their latest nightly build, so maybe that helps. also i generally don’t watch youtube a lot, so my ip probably didn’t get flagged yet

i just use yt-dlp to download the video these days. i have lots of filters in addition to ublock’s default ones, somehow they’re clashing with youtube and i can’t properly play any video. yt-dlp+mpv is also much faster on my potato system, and makes me save videos.

Maybe I should retry it, but I had very bad experience with Matrix in general (Element.io and FluffyChat, web and android) so I’m honestly thinking of it as the last option. Search feature was also pretty mediocre.

I’m honestly not sure. there’s a call icon below the message input box that generates at Jitsi meet link when clicked, however there doesn’t seem to be much integration than that. There’s no indicator that shows there’s a Jitsi meeting going on on Zulip side. My friends frequently use Discord’s voice chat feature to see if there’s anyone already in the room and whether they’re sharing screen/mic on, so this is a quite necessary feature.

same, i see IRCv3 is pretty good on paper. it’s pretty hard to find and configure it to work like discord with persistent history and file uploads though… would be nice if i can convince my friends to switch over.

i agree it’s very in beta state but i’ve known them since revolt days and tried it numerous times. it could work for some people that only needs basic chat and discord-ish UI. haven’t tried simplex or mumble, i agree jitsi works well but the UI is not like discord (idc but my friends do), matrix is too buggy but could be fine if it actually works.
edit: i’m looking at zulip rn as the discord replacement for my friend group, since it has native ios/android apps and such. the only problem is the lack of voice chat/screen sharing. there’s kinda jitsi integration (button to create meeting link) but it’s not as well integrated as discord though. (on discord, one can see on the channel list if there’s someone in voice chat and if their mic is on, screen’s being shared, etc)

I used instaloader to scrape about 5 profiles (my friends, ofc i have their permission) every day (was it called story? the 24h expiring thing). occasionally the token(?) saved in instaloader would expire and display their warning saying there was “Suspicious activity” or something, so i setup a simple script to run firefox to login and extract cookies from it every time. Had that running for some weeks and it was permabanned

it seems like a really good program. sadly they don’t have voice chat/screen sharing…
for some older pixel (pixel 2) there was some sketchy chinese dude that remotely bootloader unlocks the device for USD$30, tho i haven’t tried that myself. most likely using some leaked engineering bootloader binary.

did see the dickpic shit, due to not much auto moderation there are quite a few of those…
the DM thing is weird, i never got any… (other than the nicole spam) perhaps you triggered some weird person :/

devuan is a solid distro that just works, not sure what’s your problem with that
i used an instagram scraper tool with an account, at some point they suspended the account and required my ID. I obviously refused and just let it rot, at some point they deleted my account.

if you have the storage, just dump the whole drive. you can then boot that windows installation again, or even use it on a vm under linux.
it’s generally a good idea to not have your home folder accessible to windows programs running under wine. other than that, i don’t see the need for an antivirus. keep your system updated, and use virustotal for the occasional suspicious file

have tried running am rtmp server, for some reason even on my local network and very low res/quality it was awfully slow sadly… :/

mlmym for lemmy is quite literally old reddit. i’d like to try mbin/piefed but this frontend is too good for me.

discord screen shares are very low latency and well integrated… is it possible to do something similar with obs? genuinely asking.

stoat aims for that but isn’t stable. matrix needs jitsi for screen sharing and streaming, that’s not like the smooth experience with discord. also i’m unsure about persistent chat in the long term, i’ve used matrix for a while and the rooms tend to not last for long amd get ‘upgraded’ or something (had to click on some button that said something around ‘this chatroom has moved’… and couldn’t search from the old chatlog properly)
well i could block people/insance if i want, on my account level. unless it’s a moderation problem i prefer having the server not blacklisting certain accounts/instances based on their view.
