One thing to note is more often people here reply with genuine comments and in good faith. There is also a lack of clever snarky comments and baiting due to the lack of karma system.

And the lack of karma also leads to more comments, as well. I liken lemmy to what the internet used to be like, where conversations among strangers happened regularly. It’s very rewarding and wholesome. Definitely not the “antisocial media” that reddit prides itself on.

Karma on reddit tracks the accumulated likes and dislikes a user has gotten on all of their posts. Lemmy does not have a number like that.

Edit: What this means in practice is that on Reddit there are some users who make a lot of low-effort posts to get that karma number to go up and get a sense of accomplishment from that (even when they get a negative reputation among the other users), whereas on Lemmy that’s not really a thing. Lemmy has power-users that become well-known, but they’re more well-liked because they aim to gain actual reputation instead of just farming a karma number.

Have a backup instance in mind, if the culture of your current one doesn’t work out. Especially yours. People are not at liberty to express what’s what with this instance on this instance.

Do not be afraid to block people, because they will keep showing up, and some of them are psychic vampires whom their instances will never punish. Universal Monk has a sockpuppet on every instance and will probably respond rudely to slash angrily report this comment for pointing out they’re a block-evading ‘hmm curious’ spambot.

As on reddit, beware the cult of civility. Some communities (subs) will viciously punish ‘fuck off’ but not any behavior that frankly deserves a vulgar dismissal. Read the sidebar. Don’t be afraid to search for alternative communities if the sole moderator is intolerable. See also the Ye Power Trippin Bastards community on dbzer0.

to be clear: block universal monk

For sure. I’m terrible because I post so many articles promoting third parties, socialism, and anarchy!

after a quick check on your history, you post too much news and other stuff that I don’t like. I have no clue how true either of your claims are, but I don’t like news. It’s stressful, annoying, confusing, etc.

Me too! I have been browsing for a month or two and Reddit finally had enough of my “violent rhetoric”. This is like my second post.

So what I am gathering is that here I CAN say that I believe that the only solution to capitalism is a revolution so violent and thorough that Mao would be uncomfortable?

    Or nah?
